A common dietary belief is that if you skip breakie you will eat more throughout the day to compensate, leading to weight gain. However, emerging research is now dispelling this myth.
What did the research find?
Despite some compensation occurring throughout the day, overall daily intakes of calories may indeed be lower overall. We should not however, take these findings to mean we should start skipping breakie.
Eating a healthy breakie each day helps to ‘kick start’ your metabolism with a recent American Journal of Clinical Nutrition article demonstrating that those who ate breakfast (in comparison to those who didn’t) used more energy throughout the day and maintained a more stable glycaemia; particularly in the mornings. In short, a nutritious breakie will have benefits beyond just feeling more energetic.
